This blog covers Days 2 and 3 of our trip to the far south of Tasmania to celebrate our 15th Anniversary. I absolutely loved waking up and taking in the early morning view of the misty Huon River from our attic bedroom window. It was like looking into an painting. It was a very special and beautiful start to our 15th Anniversary. By the time we had a quick breakfast and got going, the light had Read on...
Woken by rain on the roof and in a motorhome that is not a noise which you can ignore as it tends to be pretty loud. A few claps of thunder and a check of the weather forecast said it wouldnt last long and it didnt. We set off in the Smart car for Zurich once it had dried up. The roads are pretty fantastic but we took the motorway most of the way as easier to find the way into a city and the moto Read on...
The Triglav National Park is the oldest, greatest and only national park in Slovenia. Bohinj is at the heart of it. The protected natural and cultural area surrounding the highest Slovenian mountain, Triglav. Due to the sensitive natural environment and its fragility, the park is also a part of Unescos Man and the Biosphere Programme Lake Bohinj is Slovenias largest permanent lake - it is 4.2 km Read on...
Day 3 was strange as a few people were still sick. After breakfast and packing, most of us left around 8 am. My roomie was worried she would not be able to go at all but we assured her there were options; we were still early in the trek, multiple guides, and it was not that busy on the trail so maybe she would be a half day behind. Another girl and one guy also stayed behind. The rest of us made Read on...
Up around 8am for a quick bite for breakfast and we said farewell to the Holiday Inn Express at North Conway and hit the road yet again. One thing about our Chrysler 300S is that it vibrates so badly at speeds of 40 mph, 55 mph and over 65 mph so Im guessing it needs a wheel alignment or something and is so annoying I have just adjusted to drive at a speed where it is not so annoying but its alway Read on...
Lucero, one of our volunteers at the Covid Relief Project, distributes baby clothes to mothers at Hatun Qero. The closest town where you could buy clothes is three hours on a rough dirt road from Hatun Qero. Hatun Qero is about a six hour drive from Cusco, which is why we asked the mayor of Paucartambo to send transportation that could pick us up at 5am. The night before he had sent a large truck Read on...
I have loved this city from my first visit in the early 80s, to my most recent in 2013 for Super Bowl 47. While the food is good, I think it is the spirit of the people here. They have been through so much here, particularly Hurricane Katrina. It seems nothing would ever make them leave the area, no matter how difficult life has Tennessee Williams one said, America only has three cities: New York, Read on...
My next big Trekkup trip was a cycling trip to Cambodia, including a visit to Angkor Wat, one of my big bucket list items. The Far East is only now just starting to open after two years of Covid restrictions and we were amongst the first tourists to visit this lovely country. It was pretty interesting to see how happy people were to see tourists again, which I am sure Ill mention a few times throu Read on...
Day 579 - As I walked I wondered if this would ever end . Covid that is . It was a miserable day. The sky was steely . The clouds so thick they obscured everything apart from one sliver of silver where the sun was trying its best to shine through. A real silver lining in a sea of grey. I could not hear any birdsong . They were keeping out of the wet and the cold . The butterflies had long gone and Read on...
On Friday I went to meet with Days for Girls whos office is outside of Kampala, the capital. This is a that was started in 2008 in the US. Their focus is period poverty: how many days of school or work would you miss each month if you didnt have access to proper menstrual supplies? It started with kits being made in the US and brought to those in need by humanitarian groups. DfG is now trying to Read on...
