Pennsylvania boasts its own Grand Canyon along Pine Creek. You can get the best view from Colton Point State Park. The morning ride north from Cedar Run is the last long forest run. I was up early. The wood was quiet and cool. I lost on this section last year. This time I was right on target, and nailed the park first time. Being alone at the view point made it that much better. The viewpoint for Read on...
Our second day without going anywhere in Gertie (the car). Wed been told that the beach to the south of us, Maderas, was a good surfing beach, and easy to walk to along the shore as long as the tide was low. It looked like late afternoon would be a good time to go, so in the morning we went to the closest beach. We got some boogie boards from the caretaker, but it wasnt really my thing. Waves are Read on...
Around the corner from our hotel was the magnificent Parque Jose Marti, the town square. Our guide, a local historian, Mariloli, told us the story of Cienfuegosas revealed by the buildings around the square. The city was founded in 1819 by rich French inhabitants of Haiti, who were escaping the revolution there. Having money, they built a planned city that adopted the wide straight streets of Napo Read on...
The trip was planned last October with the idea of getting away for Steve and Torys anniversary with no kids. We wanted to go somewhere similar to our Honeymoon in Costa Rica, which was 10 amazing days spent between Tamarindo Beach and Nayara at the Arenal Volcano. Panama was an option but Cancun was by our travel agent Debbie and the Haven Riviera resort was the place. We started the night bef Read on...
We head down to Cable Beach for a walk, and see it for the first time with the tide in. Rocks that were several hundred metres back from the water the last time we were here are now being pounded by the surf. Wed wondered why someone had bothered to install a path up over the cliff behind the rocks; now we know. We wade through the surf around the rocks. In stark contrast to when the tides out the Read on...
We were awoken at 5:30 this morning by an elephant shaking the tree right in front of our tent - what a cool way to wake up! We lounged in bed for a bit, then later enjoyed breakfast (we both had a very nice breakfast plate with fried potatoes, mushrooms, and two small very light pancakes - quite thin, and very tasty) along with fresh fruit. Susan had sausage and bacon with hers. We packed up and Read on...
This afternoon I took the bus to Akrotiri to see the archeological site of town that was destroyed by volcanic explosion nearly 4,000 years ago, but survived enough to be dug up now. I took photos of the landscape so you can see the height of the ash and pyroclastic fallout from that explosion. Lucky for us, there was a water way that, over time, eroded and exposed this town. Im going to upload t Read on...
It was a very, very early start as we were on an 8.45am flight (could be worse) and we do like to allow loads of time to get to airports. In fact we were way too early and we had loads of time to spare - thankfully there were none of the environmental mob blocking the roads, which is happening a lot at the moment. We were relieved to as it meant that we all the new, COVID related bureaucracy cor Read on...
We could not resist an early morning bike ride and a splash in the ocean before setting off to Tsitsikama only 100km away; another stop on the Garden Route. We drove our bicycles through the nicely build canal area of St Francis Bay, admiring the gorgeous waterfront properties and the folks being active in their kayaks, canoes and jet skis. Some kids were already out and about jumping in and out Read on...
